Shadow Hearts launched on PS2 in 2001 from developer Sacnoth (later Nautilus), as a spiritual successor to the Saturn cult hit Koudelka. You play Yuri Hyuga, a Harmonixer who can fuse with monster souls he collects from defeated enemies. That mechanic alone gives the combat a hook most JRPGs of the era did not have.

The Judgement Ring System

The combat centrepiece is the Judgement Ring. Every action in battle, attacks, magic, items, even shopping in some cases, requires you to hit timed strikes on a spinning ring. Land your hits in the sweet spots and you get full damage or bonuses. Miss and your turn fizzles. It turns what could have been a generic turn-based system into something that keeps you genuinely engaged for the full 30 to 40 hour run.
