Bayonetta 2 Wii U First Print Edition: A Rare Find for Nintendo Collectors

Ask any serious Wii U collector what sits near the top of their hunt list and Bayonetta 2 first print will come up fast. It is one of those games that quietly became a holy grail on the console, and clean copies in South Africa are genuinely hard to find. We have one in stock right now, so it felt worth explaining what makes this release special and why collectors keep chasing it.
Collector SpotlightWhy the First Print Edition Matters
When Nintendo published Bayonetta 2 on Wii U in 2014, the initial run of physical copies shipped as a two-disc set. Inside the case you got Bayonetta 2 on its own disc, plus a full retail copy of the original Bayonetta on a second disc. That bundle was a massive deal. The first Bayonetta had never been released on a Nintendo console before, and getting both games in one box at retail price was unheard of.
Later print runs and the digital eShop versions dropped that physical second disc. The original Bayonetta became a download code, and eventually those codes expired when the Wii U eShop closed in 2023. That means the only legitimate way to own the original Bayonetta on Wii U disc, today, is the first print edition. No download, no workaround, just the physical disc.
What Makes a Complete Copy Valuable
“Complete” in collector terms means the case, both discs, the original manual or insert, and ideally the outer slipcover or first print indicator if the region used one. Wii U cases are notorious for cracked hinges and yellowed inserts, and the blue discs scratch easily because owners often stacked them outside the case. A copy that has survived a decade in near-mint condition with both discs intact is rare on its own merit.
A few things collectors check before buying:
- Both discs present, original Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2, with matching artwork.
- Manual or insert intact, not torn or written on.
- Case condition, no cracks on the spine or hinges, hub teeth unbroken.
- Disc surface, no deep scratches, no resurfacing marks, no label peeling.
- Cover art, original print not a photocopy or reproduction.
The Wii U Collector Market in 2024
The Wii U was a commercial flop with around 13.5 million units sold across its lifetime. That low install base is exactly why physical software for the console is climbing in value. Print runs were small to begin with, the eShop is gone, and Nintendo has shown no interest in reissuing most of these titles. Games like Xenoblade Chronicles X, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Devil’s Third and Bayonetta 2 first print are all sitting in the same tier now: console-defining titles that are only getting harder to source as time goes on.
Heads up: Wii U first prints are not being reproduced. Every clean copy that gets opened, scratched or lost is one fewer for the collector market. Condition only matters more from here.
